History

 Our Founder

Monsignor William (Bill) Irwin,
O.C., P.H., D.D., M.S.S., A.C.S.W., R.S.W., F.R.S.H. 1928-2004

In 1961, the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton recognized several needs in the community that were not being met by existing resources. Under the leadership of Monsignor Bill Irwin, Catholic Social Services commenced operation, providing services to people of all faiths and cultures. Since then, the Agency has grown into a resource that has helped many and become well known as a place where people in need can turn for compassion and support.

As the managing parent organization for Catholic Social Services and the Sign of Hope Society, Catholic Charities provides stability, safety vision and a host of supporting services and operational efficiencies to these two dedicated “service delivery and support” organizations.

Together, as a family, these three organizations are able to provide the care and compassion thousands of Albertan families require to survive and thrive in their times of need.
